In fall 2024, I did another weekend exploration of the St. Pölten area in Austria.
I traveled to “St. Veit an der Gölsen”. My goal was a 2 1/2 hours hike to the “Staff”. 786m “mountain” or hill 🙂 .
The Hike from St. Veit an der Gölsen
The mountain is definitely the highlight with its spread-out forest. However, even before you wander through different areas, like in the beginning the bridge over the river, there is the old church of St. Veit an der Gölsen. After some initial walking away from the church and the bridge, it starts to get hilly, I wandered through pastures, forest ways and a collapsed hilly area or landslide, stones like the one in the picture with some minerals in it were quite common there. The trees towards the top of the mountain are different from the trees below. The trees are smaller here and grown quite differently. It’s almost if as you start to reach the height limit of the trees, however this line would be located much higher. Maybe the ground is somehow different, I don’t know. But yeah, it looked beautiful. The pats I used had some quite clear marking and were maintained adequate, apart from the landslide area where I needed to walk over some fallen trees.
At the top you have quite a nice view, however there are lots of trees. So don’t expect too good far view photos. The cross of the top is also in my pictures below. The top is also a bit dangerous, if you are not careful, you can fall approximately 10 m. The walk down was really easy. Because it was fall, I needed to watch my step to not slip on the slightly wet leaves on the ground. After I got back to some pastures, there is even a kind of mini museum there. Also, there is a hut “Naturfreunde OG St.Veit/Gölsen, Staffhütte, Außer-Wiesenbach“, where you could eat, drink, rest. This part was also beautiful and had some parts with quite open spaces and pastures. There is also a panorama photo down below. St. Veit has a small train station, so it is easy to reach.
More information
As my travelling App “Komoot” suggested, I started at the train station. But since I had my car available, I parked it there. Train tickets are expensive without extra discounts, which mostly don’t apply for me (anymore).
You can find it on komoot. The “town” of St. Veit an der Gölsen is quite beautifully by itself.
You can find more of my hikes in the excursion/travel category.
